Frank Barter

Frank Barter

Valley Entertainment artist Frank Barter broke on the Seattle scene before it was a scene and stormed around the Northwest. He’s been compared to great singer-songwriters like Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and works a crowd that would make Freddie Mercury proud! Frank undoubtedly is humbled by those comparisons. “Having my name lumped into with those guys is terrific, and I certainly appreciate it, I haven't had their fame and fortune yet, but to walk around knowing some folks have been touched by what I try to do on that kind of level, is pretty special.”He has toured the west coast and Pacific Northwest extensively and opened for Chuck Berry, John Haitt, Bonnie Raitt, Leon Russell, Johnny Copeland, Curtis Selgado, and Duffy Bishop to name a few. He writes, sings, and performs like a guy who’s been beat up and still won’t quit, like a guy who’s been dumped but still has hope for a happy ending. Many of the songs on his Valley Entertainment release "Ready" feature gravel and silk, triumph and longing, and celebration and regret. Produced by Grammy Award winning Producer, Scott Mathews, Frank doesn’t hold back for anyone or anything. New York Times Best selling music writer, and former publisher of Seattle's "The Rocket" Charles R. Cross once described Frank Barter songs as “Expansive as an Eastern Oregon Sunset. If you’ve never seen one of those, they’re burning in the middle, sitting on top of a wheat field, with a golden glow on each side stretching the horizon forever. That’s where Frank Barter takes you." “I tend to write my songs from a visual place. Almost theatrically. I get a set in my head and then try and create a story or a character in that setting. I am not sure why that works best other than I have some theater chops from the past. Not all the time though. Sometimes I'll hear about something so moving and if it really touches me, it kind of writes itself.”

The Poor Carters with Jennifer Smith

The Poor Carters play old time bluegrass, new-grass and Irish tunes, and include many Americana originals. They perform with guitar, mandolin, banjo, stand up bass and accordion.

Jen Smith didn’t really learn to play guitar as a youngster, first in Buffalo NY and later in Santa Cruz CA, so much as she learned to rock it out in order to find the source of its mysterious juju. Early on, drawn to The Who she found that guitar could be the extension of her inner emotion, could be raw and heartfelt and immediate. She plays and sings from within that rich emotional territory crackling with that vibrancy whether fronting her band or performing solo with only her voice and an acoustic guitar. Possessing an imaginative, always evolving song list, Jennifer will always leave you wanting to hear a few more.

Lady Lazarus and Paul Kmiec

Lady Lazarus is the solo music project of Melissa Ann Sweat, a singer-songwriter, artist, and creative writer originally from San Jose, who has lived and toured throughout the U.S. and is now residing in Santa Cruz County, CA.

Since her first release, Mantic in 2011, Lady Lazarus has received significant attention for her singular brand of spirited and enchanting, “dream folk-pop” composed for mainly voice and keyboard/piano. Among Lady Lazarus’ influences are Tom Waits, Guided By Voices, Joanna Newsom, Bill Callahan, and Vashti Bunyan to name a few.

Lady Lazarus released her latest album, Miracles, on March 3, 2015 receiving praise from The New York Times, Consequence of Sound, Magnet Magazine, Clash, Diffuser, and more. She is currently working on a book, her blog, creating new art and songs, and looking forward to playing shows in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

https://www.melissaannsweat.com/

Paul Kmiec is a singer-songwriter who hails from Boston, currently residing in Los Angeles. His debut album, A Little Yellow, was released in October 2015 and is comprised of 11 tracks that capture the rising and falling action of a relationship, much like a film score. A graduate of the SUNY Purchase Film Conservatory, Paul Kmiec finds overlap between music and cinema, saying: “There’s synesthesia between the two languages that coalesces. Suddenly, the way you pluck this note or sustain that harmony creates the effect of a camera movement.”

Seeking to craft musical environments, his body of songs cannot be placed into an all-encompassing genre. Paul’s meditations oscillate between contemplative folk, ethereal dream pop and orchestral chamber pop, but the album maintains a connective thread of vulnerable self-awareness through the optimistic, the despondent and the nostalgic.

New California Line is a traditional bluegrass trio based out of the Santa Cruz Mountains and southern Santa Clara Valley of California. Although relative new comers to the California Bay Area, Cerise and Dale have been traveling the country playing bluegrass for the past decade. As a result, their tight vocal harmonies embody a sound reminiscent of the great bluegrass and country duets of the 1930’s and 40’s. The trio is rounded out by the tasteful, high energy banjo playing and vocals of Robert Cornelius. Robert is an accomplished banjo player, whose crisp, high precision banjo runs and tenor vocals have made him staple in the California bluegrass community for more than two decades. Combined, the dynamic trio provides a captivating and entertaining show guaranteed to get the crowd on their feet.

Scotty Wright

8:00 PM20:00

Scotty Wright

A veteran musician for over 30 years, one can hear the entire spectrum of jazz singing in the performance of vocalist Scotty Wright.

With a warm, rich-toned voice and relaxed delivery, Scotty possesses a unique sound that is deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. His style features harmonic sophistication, a playful rhythmic approach and insightful phrasing of the lyric.

When Scotty takes the audience into the world of the blues, there is no doubt he has been there before. While he’s singing a romantic ballad, the listener feels each note, hearing and believing every word. And in his uptempo songs, he generates an energy that ignites the room, especially during his thrilling forays into wordless ‘scat’ singing. Scotty’s repertoire includes interpretations of classic songs by Gershwin, Porter, Kern and Rodgers & Hart; jazz standards by Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter and Billy Strayhorn, as well as his own well-crafted songs.

In everything he sings, one is certain that the song has never been heard quite the same way before, nor will be again. It is this element of the unexpected, what Scotty calls the ‘music of the moment’, that is the essence of great jazz. While his style is informed by the masters of jazz singing – Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, Jimmy Scott, Carmen McRae, Johnny Hartman and Billie Holiday, among others – Scotty’s way with a song is unmistakably his own.
